Wow. What a night. This was the absolute best concert I have ever been to in my life. I suppose, since I am not really a concert goer, that may not mean anything to some people, but it meant the world to me. It was a dream come true, the night of Dec 6th 2007.
I have been a Billy Joel Fan since I was 14 years old and I purchased Billy Joel's greatest hits vol 1&2 from a record club. I ordered this cassette tape because I thaught I knew some of the songs. Well, it was all I listened too for quite a while! I have since collected several other albums, although my collection is not yet complete.
Billy's songs have been in my head and in my heart since that time, and my dream has been to see him in concert some day. Living in New Brunswick, Canada, I knew that I would have to travel to see him. During Billy and Elton John's tour several years ago, there were concert dates in Montreal, Que. Well, at the time, I was quite pregnant with my son and unable to travel any great distance. A friend of mine did go, and brought me back a keychain. That only fueled the fire!
My chance finally came almost a year ago now. In the fall of 2007, a friend of mine living in Calgary Alberta had been to see Billy Joel and sent me a small video she had taken. The grainy images and garbeled sounds of Scenes from and Italian restaurant had me captivated! Oh, I started to shake! The blurred sounds of Piano man! OOOOHHHH! I actually teared up! Just at the thought of seeing Billy Joel live in concert.....sort of. Well my husband caught me in this moment, and convinced me to look on line to see where the tour was headed. All of Billy's dates were in California, with only a couple of exceptions. The venue the furthest east, and closest to New Brunswick, was in Kansas City. I laughed at the thought. My husband told me "why not", "this is something you have wanted for a very long time". You must understand that I am not a concert groupy by any stretch of the imagination. I may catch a show, in our city, if the price is right. Well, we went online that very evening and within a couple of hours managed to secure 13th row floor tickets and flights from NB to Missouri, and we would go in only a month's time! What luck! I was shaking with excitement! We would fly in the day before the concert, and fly home the day after. Now, I just had to wait the month.
The day we left for the airport, there had been a snow storm. Schools and businesses were closed. And needless to say, our flight was delayed. We finally arrived in Kansas City, a few hours behind schedule. And then the day of the concert, there was a snowstorm in Kansas city! I couldn't believe it! The weather had followed us! But this did not quell my excitement, even when we were stuck in traffic due to accidents for about 2 hours.
That evening after a nice dinner, my husband and I headed for the Sprint Center. A brand new venue. I giggled at the digital sign outside that read "Billy Joel Tonight!". When we got inside, we went to the souvenir booth, and I practically baught one of everything. We found our seats, I couldn't beleive how close we were. I heard Billy before the music even started! I was jumping up and down "he's here! He's here!" My husband was quite amused, I am sure. "How do you like me now" was the opener. There was no way I could even think about sitting down! I was just in awe for the entire show. All of my favorites and more, Billy's jokes, and he even gave the crowd a couple of choices of songs. When the finale came, The Piano Man, I was so emotional. I was trying to sing along, but could not contain my emotions. My husband kindly took video footage of me...blubbering, quite franckly...trying to sing along, but mostly blubbering. I still get worked up just recalling the night.
Now, having had the experience, which I considered a once in a lifetime chance at the time, I continue to keep track of any Billy Joel concerts I may be able to attend. No luck yet, Australia is a little too far away. But I am holding out hope.
Harbour Station in Saint John NB Canada is a fantastic venue, and if Billy Joel ever decides to come here, I will be the first in line!
